Story
The university was founded with the donation of $ 150,000 from John Purdue, a Lafayette business leader and philanthropist, along with $ 50,000 from Tippecanoe County, and 150 acres (0.6 km²) of land from Lafayette's residents to support the project . In 1869, it was decided that the new school would be built near the town of Lafayette and established itself as Purdue University on behalf of the institution's chief benefactor.

Purdue University is a public research university in West Lafayette, IN. Its students have access to more than 200 majors across 13 schools. It has particularly strong academics in STEM and agriculture. Purdue offered the first four-year bachelor's’ degree in aviation, established a university airport and has graduated 24 astronauts, including Neil Armstrong. The English department at Purdue developed the first online writing lab (OWL) in 1994, a resource students across the nation use when writing papers. In a controversial move, in 2017 Purdue President Mitch Daniels, the former governor of Indiana, spearheaded the purchase of for-profit Kaplan University to extend Purdue’s reach into online education. Tuition has been frozen at 2012-13 levels through at least 2019-20.A member of the Big Ten Conference, Purdue has 18 NCAA Division I sports teams and more than 900 student organizations. Purdue tradition dictates that students walking on any sidewalk that crosses Memorial Hall must smile and say hello to everyone they meet.
